Oakland
Raiders |
Classic. Silver and Black. Uncluttered. Menacing. Nuff said
Oakland Raiders: No argument here. They have a simple uncluttered design. Classic logo. I would just love to see them bring back the road jersey with the silver numerals that was used in the early seventies. For now, let’s just stick to the team’s logo and worry about the uniforms later.
Chicago Bears |
Beautiful in its simplicity. Tradition. Matches gritty tough town
Chicago Bears: Simple design to the
logo which has remained the same since the early seventies.
Previously the logo was white on blue. The update brought the orange
exterior which sealed the deal.
Dallas Cowboys |
You can hate the team but ya gotta love the sharp threads. Again, traditional, loyal to its origins
Dallas Cowboys: Sure I hate the Cowboys
but the star does shine. They like the Bears updated their logo by
boldly outlining the star and making it stand out.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers |
New. Fresh. Mixes new bold color choices that stay manly with traditional elements. As daring as the image it seeks to project. A winner and the polar opposite of the mess of a uni that preceded it.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: One of the great
redesigns of the nineties. Hey, anyone who came up with the idea of a
pewter helmet has got balls. Funny thing is that the colors and
design are simply magical.
Green Bay Packers |
Stalwart. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke and still reeks of glory.
Editors note: The Fashion commisioner inexplicably skipped commentary on The Pack. Just an oversight I'm sure but it's a shame to miss commentary on such a classic design, don't you think? |
Minnesota Vikings |
The Vikes. Better before redesign. The classic helmet makes everything else forgivable even if it’s just change for it’s own sake. Do like hybrid pant stripe with built in hip logo.
Minnesota Vikings: Disagree with Ken
here but again I am only speaking to the helmets here. The Viking
helmet resign is just better. The horn has more movement and the
coloring is exceptional. They finally got it right. The helmet color
matches the jersey design for the first time since the sixties.
San Francisco 49ers |
The blood red. The Gold. Best interlocking letter logo since the Yankees. It just works.
San Francisco 49’s: Boy do I hate the 49’s due to years of pain from that guy named Joe but we are professionals here aren’t we? One of the few times black added to the uniform design actually improved the look. The Helmet well the helmet is a classic and I have no complaints. The red is a little darker, more crimson colored joined by true gold metallic look. Exceptional. |
New York Giants |
The letters don’t interlock but they echo through time in the nicest way. The alternate and throwback pant design hold it back from a higher spot.
New York Giants: Well for a guy who likes to call himself NY GIANT MAN you would think I could not be objective. The truth is I can not. I love the new helmet since this is essentially the helmet of my youth. Never liked the name of Giants sprawled across the helmet. Just like the Viking helmet. The colors now match the jersey design. Bravo!
Indianapolis Colts |
Solid. Uncluttered but powerful. You know you’re in for a game when this graphic shows up.
Indianapolis Colts: The same logo since the sixties and it is a classic. Not sure why they left the blue facemask in the locker room and changed back to the basic grey. There is no grey in the uniform so it is a curious move.
St. Louis Rams |
Still great after all these years. First team to put a logo on a helmet and it was such a masterstroke that even after multitudinous color changes it endures. The simple helmet graphic evokes the stubborn violence and anger that define the sport.
St. Louis Rams: One of the great NFL helmets with its looping design curl. It is really just a question of color. Basic blue and white changed to blue and yellow which has now changed into the current darker blue and gold. I like the look, do you?
Washington Redskins |
The best uniform that can’t boast simplicity as a factor. The colors, graphics and striping work together like Clapton, Bruce and Baker.
Washington Redskins: I love the coloring and the helmet design period. My only complaint is that they do not use the throwback helmet each year. How could anyone argue with an arrow on a helmet? Brings back the Billy Kilmer feel in all of us. The uniform and the socks well that’s a story for another day. |
Pittsburgh Steelers |
Emblem on one side only. Outstanding use of Black. The history imprinted. Unique and like Chicago gritty and a perfect match to the town
Pittsburgh Steelers: Well, this is where I completely disagree with my erstwhile partner the Kenster. Who do they think they are? One decal on one side of the helmet? Ever try to do a match up with the Steelers as the home team. That’s right; there is no logo on that side. I hate them for doing this to the NFL. Get another logo on the other side of the helmet and then we can talk. I do like the center stripe on helmet with the numerals at the front and back of the helmet. At least they did something right. See the Giant and Raider helmets which use the classic center stripe.
Editors note: The "matchup" referred to above is Rich's custom of putting his mini helmets on display before games in a certain alignment acording to strict protocol that results in the rant above. |
New York Jets |
Gonna be honest here. It is my team but green has never been my favorite. However the graphics and striping are used so judiciously that it this uni just oozes the football ethos of Boozer, Snell, and Martin. That counts
New York Jets: I love the move back to the classic Super Bowl III helmet design. They changed the Kelly green to Forest green but the design is classic. The design is a winner. |
Philadelphia Eagles |
You just can't go wrong with an Eagle as a mascot. The winged helmet in all its different incarnations has been a winner from the word go. Just the sight of it tells teams "You might leave Philly with a win but you won't be leaving wtithout bruises".
Editors note: The Fashion commisioner skipped commentary on The Iggles as well but this could be an intended slight against an NFC east rival.
Arizona Cardinals |
Was kinda milquetoast in years past. New daring use of odd but cool jersey panels and unique pants striping changes all that.
Arizona Cardinals: Still do not understand why they have the grey facemask. There is no grey in the uniform but I digress. They sharpened up the bird and yes, he does look meaner and I approve. They have kept it simple but at least they have a logo. Nice. |
Atlanta Falcons |
See above
Atlanta Falcons: I have to admit that this new logo leaves me cold. I loved the old helmet with the classic bird and center helmet striping. I preferred the red versus the black helmet but this new design just does not work for me. |
Cleveland Browns |
God bless ’em, they’re like the Ramones. Always the same always beautiful in their simplicity and always welcome.
Cleveland Browns: Keep this helmet in the dog pound. This helmet deserves to be laid to rest in some other galaxy but not in my NFL. No logo. No respect. Hate this helmet. Clearly number 32 out of 32 NFL teams. A thorough embarrassment. Don’t you guys have a Keebler Elf that you could slap on the side of this helmet? Sorry Jim Brown, no disrespect. |
Kansas City Chiefs |
From Hank Stram to Herman Edwards, who can debate? The Arrowhead is just great
Kansas City Chiefs: Classic arrowhead
design and red coloring make this a winner. The design is a little
cleaner than the early sixties but unchanged in presentation. |
Cincinnati Bengals |
Tiger stripes? Yeah baby, it works for me. One of the most original in the league and one of my personal favorite helmets. Unfortunately they've gone a little overboard with a good thing putting the striping everywhere. Tone it back baby. Dont chill the thrill with overkill.
Cincinnati Bengals: Great helmet, very
unique. Do not like the colors but I do not like black in general.
Interesting design and definitely different.
New England Patriots |
Not every variation floats my boat but some excel.
New England Patriots: Call me old school but this logo just leaves me cold. I loved the Patriot standing over the football in the hiking position. I think the silver helmet works but the lack of center striping on the helmet detracts from the overall look.
Carolina Panthers |
It all seems like a good idea but something about the wedge shaped logo seems to have come out of a copycat focus group. Somehow that ruins it for me a little even though I love cats and blue. Still like elements though.
Carolina Panthers: I agree with ken on a lot of what he said about this helmet. What ruins it for me is the strange center striping. I do love the angry cat but the logo just seems too big. Is that fair? Not sure.
Tennessee Titans |
Just not a fan of the double panel look and the logo of a big T doesn’t do much for me. Still ok, just not my cup of tea.
Tennessee Titans: Let’s come clean here. My AFC team is said object so I am speaking as a fan of Jeff Fischer. I love the clean look and message of the T with flames. Let us remember that the Titans came from the heavens on the shoulders of Prometheus who brought Fire to mankind. That fire is depicted on the helmet. I know, I am jaded by love
but I am allowed that. They had to change from the Oil derrick due to the move from Houston to Tennessee. Fischer brought back the Titan moniker left dormant in New York from the early sixties. This helmet works for me and I would rather fight than switch.
Houston Texans |
Really do like the logo but until they win a game that matters they’re like the elevator music of the NFL. Just inconsequential backround noise.
Houston Texans: I really love this design. Simple but effective using the Texas state flag as inspiration for the coloring. A new classic and way too underrated by Ken just because the team has not won anything.
Reply by Ken: Guilty as charged here. As the season has gone on I have really come around on the whole Texan uni, especially the understated but supremely effective tapered vertical shoulder striping. |
San Diego Chargers |
Had it all going on but the redesign ruined it for me. The semi horizontal shoulder bolt took a great thing and trashed it. Love elements but the sour note makes the tune unbearable.
San Diego Chargers: I think Ken was blinded by the redesign. Let’s just talk about the helmet and it is beautiful. The white helmet is a great bonus and they improved on the overall look. Gone are the oversized numerals from the sixties version of the helmet and the striping is improved. They enlarged the striping and added the powder blue into the helmet. Love it! |
Denver Broncos |
Bravo on a nice try. Back to front fading helmet stripe. Curling pant stripes. The evil eye stallion. Kudos to the innovative effort and daring. Too bad the result doesn’t measure up.
Denver Broncos: I admit I did not like the design much when it premiered in 1997. This helmet has grown on me. The uniform is another story but the logo is an improvement over the past and it is a rocky helmet past for this franchise. Sorry John Elway.
Miami Dolphins |
A great franchise history and an added angry fish eye can’t make this a great uni.
Odd colors and graphics. Nobody would wear this uniform if they had a choice.
Miami Dolphins: Brilliant, subtle
redesign. An angrier dolphin and added classic blue striping not only
helped the helmet but the uniform as well. Highest marks! |
Buffalo Bills |
Streaking buffalo an improvement over sedentary one of OJ era but the double panel look leaves it lacklustre in a lacklustre town.
Buffalo Bills: A redesign based on
striping and subtle color changes. Silver and dark blue striping were
added to add flexibility to the uniform. I do not believe it either
helps nor does it harm the helmet. A good design but I would not call
it a great design that would leave you breathless. |
New Orleans Saints |
The decoration on the top of a wrought iron fence is no emblem for a football team.
New Orleans Saints: Oh Ken! You could
not be more wrong. The fleur de leys design and the coat of arms feel
of the logo are an NFL classic. Old gold with black striping works
every bit as well as your Raider helmet and I believe you have
shortchanged a classic design.
Reply by Ken: Respect the points made above but am so enamored of my own initial wisecrack that I'm stickin' with this one ; ) |
Jacksonville Jaguars |
Again. Wedge shaped logo from some focus group. This uni is to footall what Def Leopard was to rock. Manufactured and consumed only by people who didn’t know any better.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Great looking cat
but it stops right there. Fade to black. No striping creates a flat
boring look. Not impressed at all. They have wasted the great teal
blue coloring that was at their disposal. |
Baltimore Ravens |
From the classic Colts uniform to this. Pity the poor people of Baltimore. At least its not wedge shaped.
Baltimore Ravens: One of the worst
designs period. Black helmet using center striping just like the
Titans. The big problem is the logo itself. That bird just does not
work. They have this wonderful coat of arms on the side of the
jersey which would have worked much better. The Ravens like the
Jaguars and too in love with the black aspect of the helmet and it
permeates to the uniform. Poor. |
Seattle Seahawks |
I love that it’s the only team to use a fluorescent color. Still, a Seahawk is too small of a bird to strike fear into anything but an even smaller bird.
Seattle Seahawks: A little shocked that
you ranked this design so low. Much like the Bucs, the Seahawks went
with a bold gun metal grey blue color which was unique and under
used. The design looks mean and ready to play. Thank you Seattle.
Detroit Lions |
It should work. But somehow it doesn’t. Never has. No one knows why.
Detroit Lions: Another classic logo
that has added outside shading to keep it alive all of these years.
The added black though, I do not feel did the helmet any favors.
Unlike the dolphins the striping actually detracts from the overall
look. That being said, I have always liked the Honolulu Blue and
Silver look. I have also liked the classic lion logo. |
